Procedure
140 g. (0.34 mole) of the dihydrochloride of 4-[2-(1-benzylpiperazin-4-yl)-ethyl]-phenylacetic acid is dissolved in a mixture of ethanol and 6N hydrochloric acid and 10% palladium-charcoal is added thereto, followed by hydrogenation in a shaker bomb. If the reaction proceeds too slowly, the catalyst is replaced by fresh catalyst. The reaction mixture is then suction filtered and the filtrate is evaporated and brought to crystallisation with some ethyl acetate. Yield 90 g. (82% of theory) of the dihydrochloride of 4-[2-(piperazin-1-yl)-ethyl]-phenylacetic acid; m.p. 238°-239° C. (recrystallised from acetone/water).
