cis-4-(2-Amino-6-chloropurin-9-yl)-2-buten-1-ol (50 mg) in formic acid-water 7+3 (5 ml) was heated at 45° C. under a nitrogen atmosphere for 20 hours. The solvent was evaporated in vacuum and the residue was dried. Water (0.5 ml) was added and the solution was neutralized with aqueous ammonia. The precipitate was filtered, washed with water, ethanol and ether, and dried to give the compound cis-9-(4-hydroxy-2-butenyl)guanine (40 mg).
