n-Butyllithium (1.6 M in hexanes, 1.33 mL, 2.13 mmol) was added dropwise to 88 (503 mg, 2.04 mmol) dissolved in anhydrous THF (25 mL) at−78° C. The reaction mixture was stirred for 20 min and 87 (460 mg, 1.85 mmol), dissolved in THF (25 mL), was added dropwise. The mixture was warmed slowly to RT and stirred overnight. Water (150 mL) was added and the mixture was extracted with ether (3×100 mL). The combined ethereal extracts were washed with water (200 mL), brine (200 mL), dried (MgSO4), and concentrated under reduced pressure. The resulting crude oil was taken up in a mixture of EtOH (10 mL) and 12 M HCl (2 mL) and refluxed for 2 h. Removal of solvent and flash chromatography (20:1 to 5:1 hexanes:EtOAc) afforded 200 mg (35%) of 89 as a white solid. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3): δ 1.60 (br s, 6H), 2.23 (m, 4H), 6.00 (s, 1H), 6.79 (d, J=8.2 Hz, 2H), 6.89-6.95 (m, 3H), 7.02 (d, J=7.9 Hz, 1H), 7.76 (t, J=7.6 Hz, 1H), 10.28 (s, 1H).
