Procedure

2,4-diamino-5-(5-amino-2,4-dichlorophenyl)-6-methylpyrimidine (1.95 g, 7 mmol) was dissolved in a mixture of concentrated hydrochloric acid (3.6 ml) and water (6 ml). The temperature was lowered to 10° C. A chilled aqueous solution (3.6 ml) of sodium nitrite (0.50 g, 7 mmol) was added dropwise, keeping the temperature at 10° C. This mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours, then chilled before adding it dropwise to a cold solution of cuprous chloride (1.7 g, 17 mmol) in concentrated hydrochloric acid (50 ml). A grey solid precipitated which was filtered off and dried. This crude product (2.30 g) was dissolved in ethyl acetate and washed twice with ammonium hydroxide solution and once with brine. After evaporating the ethyl acetate an off-white solid was obtained (2.04 g). After recrystallisation from 10% methanol in chloroform the pure product was obtained (0.55 g, 2 mmol), mp. 262° C. (dec).
