Procedure

NaNO2 (0.24 g, 3.43 mmol) was added to a suspension of 3-(4-amino-3,5-dibromophenyl)-1-(3,4-dichlorobenzoyl)-1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyridazine (1.0 g, 1.98 mmol, HBr (25%, 3 mL) and water (6 mL)in ethanol (50 mL). The resulting mixture was stirred and heated at a low temperature for 1.5 hours. CuBr2 in HBr (48%, 6 mM) was added to the reaction mixture and the resulting mixture was stirred for 3 hours at room temperature. Water was added to the reaction and a solid precipitated from this mixture. The solid was purified by column chromatography to give the title compound as a white solid: mp 179°-182° C.
