A 0.80 g portion of methyl 5-cyano-2,4-dimethoxybenzoate was dissolved in 8 ml of acetonitrile and 5 ml of water, and 7 ml of 2N sodium hydroxide aqueous solution was added, followed by stirring at room temperature for 6 hours. After completion of the reaction, the reaction solution was poured into 2N hydrochloric acid aqueous solution, extracted with chloroform and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was evaporated under a reduced pressure to give 0.65 g of 5-cyano-2,4-dimethoxybenzoic acid.
