Procedure
A mixture of 2,2-dibenzyloxy-N-benzyloxymethyl-N(3-trifluoromethylphenyl)-acetamide (0.27 g, prepared as described in Step 4), 10% palladium on carbon (50 mg), trifluoroacetic acid (1 ml) and dichloromethane (50 ml) was stirred under an atmosphere of hydrogen for five hours. It was filtered through Hyflo Supercel™, evaporated under reduced pressure and chromatographed on silica, using dichloromethane-ethanol (49:1) as eluant to give the title compound (0.07 g) as a waxy solid, m.p. 75°-76° C.
