To a solution of 5-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-(4-(methylsulfonyl)phenyl)-3-phenyl-2-(5H)-furanone (Example 4) (1.0 g) in 120 mL of MeOH was added 0.1 mL of concentrated H2SO4. The mixture was heated to reflux for 3 days and then treated with 2 mL of Et3N. Methanol was removed under reduced pressure and the residue was purified by silica gel flash chromatography eluted with 4:1 toluene/EtOAc. After a swish from 2:1 hexane/EtOAc, 0.8 g of the title compound was obtained as a white solid.
