A mixture of 24.75 g of 4-[2-(5-cyano-2-methoxybenzenesulfonylamino)ethyl]-3-methoxymethoxyphenyl trifluoromethanesulfonate, 8.32 g of 2-(methylthio)phenylboronic acid, 2.73 g of tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(0), 728 mg of tetra-n-butylammonium bromide, 10.00 g of sodium carbonate, 48 mL of water and 285 mL of toluene was heated under an argon atmosphere at 85° C. for 15 hours. The precipitate was collected by filtration, washed successively with ethyl acetate and water to give 19.74 g of 5-cyano-2-methoxy-N-[2-(3-methoxymethoxy-2′-methylthiobiphenyl-4-yl)ethyl]benzenesulfonamide as an yellow powder.
