A solution of (2R)-1-tert-butoxycarbonyl-4-methanesulfonylpiperazine-2-carboxylic acid (2.90 g) in 4N HCl-AcOEt solution (40 ml) was stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes. The solution was concentrated in vacuo and the residue was solidified with Et2O to give 2.15 g of (2R)-4-methanesulfonylpiperazine-2-carboxylic acid hydrochloride as a powder.
