Trifluoroacetic acid (10 ml) was added to a solution of tert-butyl (cis)-4-[2-([(2S)-1-(1,3-benzoxazol-2-yl)-2-piperidinyl]carbonylamino)ethyl]-3,5-dimethyl-1-piperazinecarboxylate (0.95 g) [see Preparation 8] in dichloromethane (10 ml) at 0° C. The reaction mixture was then stirred at room temperature for 1.5 hours, after which time the solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the residue partitioned between saturated potassium carbonate solution and ethyl acetate. The organic layer was separated, dried over magnesium sulphate and the solvent removed under reduced pressure. The product was azeotroped several times with dichloromethane to afford (2S)-1-(1,3-benzoxazol-2-yl)-N2-2-[(cis)-2,6-dimethyl-1-piperazinyl]ethyl-2-piperidinecarboxamide (0.65 g) as a white foam.
