Thionyl chloride (3.62 g) was added dropwise to a stirred suspension of 3,5-dimethoxy-4-(5-methyl-2-phenyl-4-oxazolylmethoxy)benzyl alcohol (9.00 g) in tetrahydrofuran (50 ml)-toluene (150 ml) at 0° C. After stirring at room temperature for 3 hours, the reaction mixture was concentrated. The residual crystals were dissolved in ethyl acetate and washed with aqueous sodium bicarbonate and water. The ethyl acetate layer was separated, dried (MgSO4), and concentrated to give 4-(4-chloromethyl-2,6-dimethoxyphenoxymethyl)-5-methyl-2-phenyloxazole as crystals. Recrystallization from acetone-hexane gave colorless needles (7.00 g, yield 74%). m.p. 118-119° C.
