Procedure
A 1.8 ml portion of 5 N hydrochloric acid was added to 9 ml of methanol solution containing 395 mg (1.25 mmol) of 2-t-butoxycarbonyl-9-methoxymethyl-2,3,4,9-tetrahydro-1H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole and allowed to stand at room temperature for 3 days. This was adjusted to pH 8 with 5 N sodium hydroxide solution. Methanol was removed by evaporation under a reduced pressure and the resulting residue was extracted with chloroform. The extract was washed with water, dried (Na2SO4) and then concentrated under a reduced pressure to obtain 9-methoxymethyl-2,3,4,9-tetrahydro-1H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole quantitatively.
