Procedure
Benzoic acid (30.5 g, 0.25 mol) is treated with chlorosulfonic acid (10 ml/1.05 mol). The reaction mixture is heated to 120° C. in the course of 20 min with stirring. To complete the reaction, it is stirred for 45 min at 125° C. until the absence of the evolution of gas. The reaction mixture is cooled to room temperature (RT) and added to 300 ml of ice with stirring. The cream-colored precipitate is filtered off, thoroughly washed with ice water and dried. Yield: 40.8 g (74%)
