Procedure
In the presence of a catalytic amount of HCl (4N=4 mol/l), 1 mol of diaminomaleonitrile was reacted with 1 mol of benzoylacetone in a solvent (benzene) at 45° C. for 6 hours to give 2,3-dicyano-5-hydroxy-5-phenyl-7-methyl-4H-1,4-diazepine (compound 1a). The diazepine compound (1a) thus obtained was reacted with 4-methoxybenzaldehyde in the presence of piperidine to give the object compound 2,3-dicyano-5-hydroxy-5-phenyl-6-(4-methoxyphenylmethylidene)-7-methyl-4H-1,4-diazepine (compound 1).
