Procedure
Benzothiophene (2.68 g, 20.0 mmol) was dissolved in glacial acetic acid (100 mL) and cooled to 0° C. The resulting solution was treated by dropwise addition of bromine (1.08 mL, 21.0 mmol). The reaction mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature and was stirred for 16 hours. The crude mixture was concentrated to an oil. The residue was purified by silica gel chromatography eluting with hexane to obtain 4.02 g (94%) 3-bromobenzothiophene.
