Procedure
To a solution of lithium aluminum hydride (1.27 g, 33.5 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (10.0 mL) was added a solution of 3-benzoyl-7-phenyl-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexahydroazepino[4,5-b]indole (1.27 g, 3.46 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (25.0 mL) at 0° C. The mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. Water (1.3 mL), 15% sodium hydroxide solution (1.3 mL) and water (3.9 mL) were added sequentially and the mixture was stirred for 30 min. Celite was added and the mixture was filtered through Celite. The filtrate was concentrated in vacuo to give 1.12 g (92%) of the title compound: mp 78-79° C.; 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.92, 7.62, 7.51-7.26, 7.19-7.11, 3.83, 3.00-2.90; 13C NMR(100 MHz, CDCl3) δ 139.5, 139.3, 136.5, 132.4, 129.4, 129.1, 128.9, 128.3, 128.2, 127.2, 127.0, 124.8, 121.0, 119.8, 117.0, 113.3, 60.7, 55.7, 53.8, 28.6, 24.0; IR (drift) 2933, 2913, 2907, 2885, 2813, 1458, 1367, 1345, 1336, 1325, 796, 760, 745, 730, 700 cm−1; MS (EI) m/z 352 (M+); Anal. Calcd for C25H24N2: C, 85.19; H, 6.86; N, 7.95. Found: C, 85.00; H, 6.89; N, 7.93.
