In a manner similar to that of Example 1(i), by reaction of 980 mg (3.6 mmol) of methyl 3′-hydroxy-2,6,2′-trimethylbiphenyl-4-carboxylate with 1.75 g (4.5 mmol) of 3,4-bis(benzoyloxymethyl)benzyl bromide and 570 mg (4.1 mmol) of potassium carbonate, the desired product is obtained in the form of white crystals (m.p.=131-132° C.; m=2.16 g; Y=95%).
