Procedure
In a 100-mL round-bottom flask, methyl 5-[(4,4,5,7-tetramethyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-chromen-6-yl)methyl]-2-furoate (532 mg, 1.62 mmol) and methanol (5 mL) were placed. The reaction was stirred at room temperature overnight, and then the mixture was poured in water, acidified with HCl (6N) and extracted with ethyl acetate. The separated organic layer was washed with brine, dried over MgSO4, and concentrated to yield 5-[(4,4,5,7-tetramethyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-chromen-6-yl)methyl]-2-furoic acid (208) (343.6 mg, 67.5% yield). 1HNMR (CDCl3) δ 1.31 (s, 6H), 1.82 (m, 2H), 2.13 (s, 3H), 2.21 (s, 3H), 2.62 (t, 2H), 4.01 (s, 2H), 5.82 (d, 1H), 6.55 (s, 1H), 7.16 (d, 1H). APCI-MS m/z 315 (M+1).
