Procedure
0.4 ml of triethylamine is added to a solution of 1.28 g (2.41 mmole) of 2-[(3S,4R)-4-(benzthiazol-2-yldithio)-3-phenoxyacetoxy-2-oxoazetidin-1-yl]-3-methylenebutyric acid methyl ester in 30 ml of methylene chloride and the mixture is stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes. The reaction mixture is diluted with 50 ml of methylene chloride, washed in succession with 2N hydrochloric acid, water and sodium chloride solution, dried over sodium sulphate and freed from solvent in vacuo. The residue is purified by chromatography over silica gel with toluene/ethyl acetate (19:1) and yields the title compound in the form of a faint yellow oil.
