Reaction Steps

To a solution of product (b) (2.218 g) in methanol (20 ml) was added 28% sodium methoxide (1.28 ml). After stirring at room temperature for 30 minutes, the solvent was stripped off and water (30 ml) was added. With vigorous stirring the pH was adjusted to ca. 1.5 with 6N HCl and the resulting solid granulated for 1 hour, filtered off, washed with water, and dried in vacuo to give compound (c), 1.903 g, 98% yield.
