Reaction Steps
2,5-Dimethoxyphenylisothiocyanate (39 g, 0.22 mol) and sodium azide (14.3 g, 0.22 mol) were added to a mixture of water (150 ml) and ethanol (60 ml) and the mixture was heated on a steam bath to about 80° C. to 90° C. with stirring for 3 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature and a 2N HCl solution (100 ml) was added. The raw crystals formed were collected by filtration and recrystallized from isopropanol to obtain 1-(2,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-5-mercaptotetrazole (35.7 g, yield 75%). The melting point was 151° to 152° C.
