Procedure
To a solution of 3,6-difluoro-2-(4-ethoxycarbonyl-1-piperazinyl)-5-nitrobenzyl chloride (8.1 g) in dimethylsulfoxide (90 ml) is added gradually sodium boron hydride (1.8 g) at below 30° C. The mixture is stirred at the same temperature for one hour, and the reaction mixture is pored into ice water, and then acidified with conc. hydrochloric acid and extracted with diethyl ether. The solvent is distilled off to give 2-(4-ethoxycarbonyl-1-piperazinyl)-3,6-difluoro-5-nitrotoluene (7.1 g).
