A solution of 4-hydrazino-N-(4-ethoxyphenyl)benzenesulphonamide hydrochloride (1.2 g) in 25% aqueous acetic acid (100 ml) was added to phthalimidobutyraldehyde diethyl acetal (1 g). The resulting suspension was stirred at room temperature for 1 h, basified (sodium carbonate) and extracted with ethyl acetate (2×100 ml). The combined organic extracts were dried and evaporated in vacuo to give a solid which gave the title compound (1.5 g) on trituration with ethyl acetate, m.p. 156°-158°.
