Procedure

4.7 g of 6-bromo-1-hexene, 6.3 g of 2-methylbutyl 4'-hydroxybiphenyl-4-carboxylate, and 3.1 g of potassium carbonate were refluxed in 2-butanone for 20 hours. After the reaction, inorganic salt was removed by washing with water. After organic phase was dried over magnesium sulfate, the solvent was distilled out under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was purified by column chromatography to obtain 6.4 g of the objective ester compound. (Yield: 79%).
