Procedure

A mixture of 528 mg (2.98 mmol) of 4,5-dichloro-1,2-phenylenediamine and 448 mg (2.98 mmol) of benzoylformic acid in 8 mL of ethanol was refluxed overnight. It was filtered, washed by water, and dried to leave 760 mg (87%) of solid. 1H NMR (DMSO-d6), 7.465-7.536 (m, 4), 8.088 (s, 1), 8.256-8.282 (m, 2) 12.683 (s, 1).
