3-tert-Butoxycarbonylamino-2,6-dimethyl-4-trifluoromethylpyridine (21.12 g, 72.8 mmol) was dissolved in methanol (70 mL), and subsequent to the addition of 10% hydrogen chloride in methanol (140 mL), the solution was stirred at 60° C. for 12 hours. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure, and the residue was suspended in a mixture of ethyl acetate and ether. The reaction product was collected by filtration, and washed with ether to obtain the title compound (15.64 g, 82%) as a colorless powder.
