Procedure
A mixture of 2-(t-butoxycarbonylamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (20.50 g) and 6N hydrochloric acid (38.8 ml) in ethanol (100 ml) was refluxed for one hour. After cooling, the reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure and the resulting residue was triturated with ethanol-ethylacetate (1:1) to obtain 2-amino-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone dihydrochloride (13.40 g) as pale reddish purple crystalline powder.
