Procedure

To a solution of ethyl 4-(5-chlorothiophen-2-yl)-4-oxobutyrate (900 mg) in dichloromethane (9 ml) was added bromine (200 μl) under ice-cooling, and after stirring at the same temperature for 30 minutes, the reaction mixture was warmed to room temperature and the mixture was stirred for one hour. The reaction mixture was poured into ice-water, and ethyl acetate and diethyl ether were added thereto. The organic layer was collected, washed with water and brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and the solvent was removed under reduced pressure to obtain ethyl 3-bromo-4-(5-chlorothiophen-2-yl)-4-oxo-butyrate (1.22 g) as pale brownish liquid.
