Procedure
3-(2-Cyanophenyl)-5-(2-pyridyl)-1-(3-formylphenyl)-1,2-dihydropyridin-2-one (585 mg) was dissolved in 20 ml of methanol, 260 mg of sodium borohydride were added with ice cooling and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for one night. The reaction solution was diluted with ethyl acetate, washed with a saturated saline solution and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The drying agent was filtered off and the filtrate was concentrated in vacuo and purified by an NH silica gel column chromatography (ethyl acetate). The resulting crude crystals were recrystallized from ethyl acetate-diethyl ether to give 320 mg of the title compound.
