The crude 2-Carboxy-2-[7-(3-fluoro-benzenesulfonyl)-chroman-4-yl]-malonic acid of step 3 was dissolved in HOAc (50 ml), and the mixture was heated to 100° C. overnight. HOAc was removed via vacuum, and he residue was dissolved in EtOAc, washed with H2O, brine, dried with MgSO4, filtered and concentrated to give [7-(3-Fluoro-benzenesulfonyl)-chroman-4-yl]-acetic acid as a colorless oil which turned to a white solid upon standing: 2.55 g; MS 373(M+Na)+, 723.3 (2M+Na)+.
