A solution of oxalyl chloride (0.040 mole) in dichloromethane (20 mL) is added dropwise to an ice bath cooled solution of 4-(5-(aminosulfonyl)-4-chloro-2-[(2-furanylmethyl)amino]benzoyloxy)butanoic acid (300) (0.040 mole) in dichloromethane (50 mL). The reaction is stirred at ambient temperature for 5 hours. The reaction solution is washed with 5% aqueous sodium bicarbonate, with water, and then with a saturated sodium chloride solution. The organic layer is dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated in vacuo to give 4-(5-(aminosulfonyl)-4-chloro-2-[(2-furanylmethyl)amino]benzoyloxy)butanoyl chloride (313). See eg., D. L.
