Procedure

To a suspension of 4-methoxy-1-trifluoromethyl-indan-1-ol (170 mg, 0.73 mmol) in benzene (4 mL) was added p-toluenesulfonic acid (139 mg, 0.73 mmol). The mixture was stirred overnight at 80° C., and concentrated under reduced pressure. The crude residue was purified by column chromatography to give 4-methoxy-1-trifluoromethyl-3H-inden. The 4-methoxy-1-trifluoromethyl-3H-inden was dissolved in CH2Cl2 (2 ml) and 1M-BBr3 (in CH2Cl2, 1.46 mL, 1.46 mmol) was added dropwise. The mixture was stirred for 1 hour at room temperature, and then washed with saturated ammonium chloride, water and brine, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. The crude residue was purified by column chromatography to give 1-trifluoromethyl-3H-inden-4-ol (70 g, 48%).
