A mixture of 1.1 g of β-oxo-α-ethoxycarbonyl-β-(2-pyrrolyl)-propionitrile, 1.5 g of 4-fluoroaniline and 60 ml of xylene, is refluxed for 41/2 hours. After standing and cooling to room temperature overnight, the solution is filtered, evaporated and the residue is purified to yield β-oxo-α-(4-fluorophenyl carbamoyl)-β-(2-pyrrolyl)-propionitrile of example 5.
