Trifluoroacetic acid (2.9 mL, 38 mmol) was added at 0° C. to a stirred solution of 4-(7-fluoro-3-methoxycarbonylmethyl-naphthalen-1-yl)-piperidine-1-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester (which may be prepared as described above; 1.05 g, 2.6 mmol) in dry CH2Cl2 (25 mL) under nitrogen. The solution was stirred at room temperature for 16 h and then the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was triturated with diethyl ether (3×5 mL) and dried under vacuum to give (6-fluoro-4-piperidin-4-yl-naphthalen-2-yl)-acetic acid methyl ester trifluoroacetate salt (0.80 g, 74%) as a white solid. MS cald. for C18H21FNO2 [(M+H)+] 302, obsd. 302.4.
