Procedure

A solution of 1-(3,5-dimethylphenyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole (5 g, 28.9 mmol) and iodomethane (8.99 mL, 144 mmol) in EtOAc (50 mL) was stirred for 40 h. The precipitate was collected by filtration and washed with small amount of EtOAc to yield 1-(3,5-dimethylphenyl)-4-methyl-1H-1,2,4-triazol-4-ium iodide (1 g, 11%) as a white solid.
