A solution of 8-(5-Methyl-1,3-thiazol-2-yl)-1,4-dioxaspiro[4.5]decan-8-ol (110 g, 4.14 mmol) in 20 mL of THF/3 N HCl (1:1) was stirred for 1 h at 50° C. After cooling to room temperature, the mixture was treated with Na2CO3 to pH 8 and extracted with EtOAc (3×). The combined organic layers were washed with saturated NaCl solution, dried (MgSO4), and concentrated to give 0.82 g of 4-hydroxy-4-(5-methyl-1,3-thiazol-2-yl)cyclohexanone in 99% yield. MS (EI) (M+H)+=212.2.
