Procedure

1-(3-Chloro-2-methyl-phenyl)-ethanone (390 mg, 2.3 mmol) was dissolved in ethanol (6 ml) and hydroxylamine hydrochloride (433 μL, 10.4 mmol) was added. The mixture was stirred at 80° C. for 1.5 hours. Reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo and partitioned between water and ethyl acetate. The aqueous portion was extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic portions were washed with brine, dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated in vacuo to give (1Z)-1-(3-chloro-2-methylphenyl)ethanone oxime as a yellow oil (383 mg, 2.08 mmol, 90% yield). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3): 6.95-7.37 (m, 3H), 2.36 (s, 3H), 2.26 (s, 1H), 2.21 (s, 3H); MS (EI) for C9H10ClNO: 184 (MH+).
