A solution of 14.4 g (53 mmole) of the dimethylamide of α-phenylthio-phenylacetic acid, 24.5 milliliters (160 mmole) of POCl3 in 250 milliliters of absolute toluene is refluxed for 6 hours. After mixing with water, it is neutralised with ammonia and the organic phase is dried over a mixture of K2CO3 and activated charcoal and evaporated: 3-dimethylamino-2-phenyl-benzo(b)thiophene in the form of a crude oily produce which, triturated with methanol, yields 11.1 g (83% of theory) of colourless rods, mp 84°-85° (methanol).
