Procedure
The solution of methyl 3-(2,2-dimethoxyethyl)-1,3-dihydro-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole-4-carboxylate 2,2-dioxide (0.2 g, 0.5 mmol) from Step D above in methylene chloride (10 mL) with water (1 mL) and trifluoroacetic acid (0.5 mL) was stirred at room temperature for 3.5 h. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure and dried overnight under high vacuum to remove the excess trifluoroacetic acid, providing methyl 3-(2-oxoethyl)-1,3-dihydro-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole-4-carboxylate 2,2-dioxide (0.2 g): 1H NMR (500 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ 9.56 (s, 1H), 7.42 (dd, J=7.5, 1.5 Hz, 1H), 7.19-6.99 (m, 2H), 4.71 (s, 2H), 3.78 (s, 3H).
