Procedure
A mixture of methyl 3-formyl-1H-indazole-4-carboxylate (B1) (3.3 g, 16.1 mmol), 4-fluorophenylboronic acid (4.5 g, 32.3 mmol) and copper(II) acetate (3.99 g, 21.9 mmol) was degassed under nitrogen (3×). Anhydrous dichloromethane (240 ml) and triethylamine (4.5 ml, 13.5 mmol) were added. The mixture was degassed under nitrogen (2×) and stirred at ambient temperature for 21 h. The mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure and the residue was purified by column chromatography (silica gel, 0-30% ethyl acetate in hexanes) to afford methyl 1-(4-fluorophenyl)-3-formyl-1H-indazole-4-carboxylate (454 mg, 9%) as a brown solid. 1H NMR (500 MHz, CDCl3) δ 10.38 (s, 1H), 8.01 (d, J=8.3 Hz, 1H), 7.91-7.88 (m, 2H), 7.80 (d, J=7.1 Hz, 1H), 7.69 (dd, J=8.4, 7.3 Hz, 1H), 7.53 (t, J=8.7 Hz, 2H), 3.93 (s, 3H); MS (ESI+) m/z 299 (M+H).
