Procedure

46.5 grams (0.46 mole) maleic anhydride is dissolved in 500 mls methanol. 36 g K2CO3 is added to a pH of 8.5-8.6, the solution is filtered and evaporated to dryness. 77.6 grams of product is obtained. Purity=96.4% by NMR analysis.
