Reaction Steps
6.11 g (19 mmole) of 4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-oxy-hexanoate, 11 g potassium hydroxide and 100 ml absolute ethanol were stirred at room temperature for 3 hours, after which time the mixture was poured into 300 ml ice water. The resultant solution was neutralized with hydrochloric acid. The solids were filtered out, washed with water, and dried in a vacuum desiccator for 48 hours. After recrystallization from absolute ethanol, the resultant product (70% yield) had a melting point of 165° C.
