1.3 g of potassium carbonate and 3.0 g of N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide were added to a solution mixture comprising 2.0 g of 4-methanesulfonyl-3-methoxymethyl-2-methylbenzoic acid, 0.9 g of 1,3-cyclohexanedione and 100 ml of t-amyl alcohol. The mixture was stirred at 80° C. for 11 hours. It was concentrated under reduced pressure, and then an aqueous potassium carbonate solution was added. Then, insoluble substances were removed by filtration. The filtrate was washed with chloroform, then acidifed by an addition of concentrated hydrochloric and extracted with chloroform. The chloroform layer was washed with water and with a saturated sodium chloride aqueous solution and then dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure to obtain 1.1 g of a crude desired product. This crude product was recrystallized from ethanol to obtain 0.2 g of the desired product. Melting point: 192°-198° C.
