Procedure
To the solution of 150 mg of N-(4-methoxycarbonyl-2-phenethylbutyryl)-4-aminobutyric acid methyl ester in 3 ml of methanol is added 1.0 ml of 1N sodium hydroxide and stirred for 4 hours at room temperature. The mixture is acidified with 1.5 ml of 1N hydrochloric acid, and concentrated. The solid is collected and washed with water to yield N-(4-carboxy-2-phenethyl-butyryl)-4-aminobutyric acid.
