Procedure
Ethyl 2-acetyl-6-methoxynicotinate (0.92 g, 4.13 mmol) in 20 ml of methanol is stirred with lithium hydroxide monohydrate (0.18 g, 4.20 mmol) in 3 ml of water. After 1.5 hours, the water and methanol are removed by rotoevaporation The residue is dissolved in chloroform and 3N hydrochloric acid. The aqueous phase is extracted with chloroform and the combined organic extracts are washed with brine and dried and the solvent is removed to give 2-acetyl-6-methoxynicotinic acid.
