Procedure

1.46 g (6 mmol) of 7-amino-3-methoxymethyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylate were suspended in 30 ml of methylene chloride, and 0.92 ml (6 mmol) of 1,8-diazabicyclo-(5,4,0)-undec-7-ene (DBU) was added at 0° C. After 30 minutes, 1.66 g (6.5 mmol) of iodomethyl 2,2-dimethyl-butyrate (compare preparation example 4) were added, while cooling with ice, and the mixture was subsequently stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. The precipitate which had separated out was filtered off with suction and the crude product was chromatographed (SiO2 ; toluene/ethyl acetate=1:1). 1.2 g (53%) of the title compound were obtained.
