Procedure

20% Palladium hydroxide on carbon (1.4 g) was added to a solution of 1,2,3,3a,4,8a-hexahydro-4-methyl-3-phenylmethylaminocyclopent[b]indol-7-ol (14 grams) in ethanol (100 ml) and the mixture was hydrogenated at 45 psi H2 pressure using a Parr apparatus at 50° C. for 5 hours. The mixture was filtered and the solution was concentrated to give 3-amino-1,2,3,3a,4,8a-hexahydro-4-methylcyclopent[b]indol-7-ol 4-methylcyclopent[b]indol-7-ol (10.7 grams).
