In a round-bottom flask, methyl trifluoroacetate (10.5 g, 81.9 mmol) was added to neat ethanolamine (4.0 g, 66 mmol) at room temperature with continuous stirring. Reaction completion was determined by the absence of ninhydrin activity. After 2 h, the reaction was concentrated by rotary evaporation and purified by distillation (11 mm Hg, b.p. 127° C.), yielding a colorless oil, 9.5 g, 93%.
