The material from Step 1 (1.0 g) was dissolved in MeOH (300 ml) and PtO2 (40 mg) was added. The mixture was subjected to hydrogen (50 psi) in a Parr shaker for 3.5 h, then filtered through Celite and to the filtrate was added conc. HCl (1 ml) before concentrating to yield 5-chloro-4-methyl-pyridine-2,3-diamine hydrochloride (1 g). NMR (CDCl3) δ 7.39 (s, 1H), 2.29 (s, 3H).
